Students in Mzuzu received a special package this Christmas with gifts prepared by the UC Berkeley International Graduate Student Ministry. Each year, members of the group exchanged gifts during Christmas, but this year, they thought of doing something different. Jerry Tai, one of the members, heard about Luke International through his sister, who volunteered in Malawi in 2016. He suggested that instead of doing a regular gift exchange, they could engage with students in Malawi — it would be an opportunity to learn about another culture and do something meaningful.

A presentation about LIN’s work in Malawi was done during one of the group meetings, and after several discussions with the Country Representative, Ms. Rebecca Mtegha, they decided to send small gifts (stationary and learning materials) and letters to students in LIN’s scholarship program to encourage them in their studies. LIN is assisting tuition payment to over 150 students from primary, secondary and tertiary level of education. These students also benefit in psycho-social support through motivational or team-building activities that LIN conducts routinely.

During the pandemic, it would seem that “isolation” ”social distancing” and “travel bans” are the key words of the season. The link created between the students from Malawi and USA has proven that we can still connect.
